Fixed Wheel Jogging Strollers
At one point a fixed front wheel was absolutely necessary for running. They are still the choice of hard-core runners. However, most new strollers with a swivel wheel have a locking option, so fixed wheel designs are not as popular as they used to be. Keep in mind that there are no 16 inch front swivel wheels on the market yet, so models with a 16 inch fixed front wheel still have their place -- especially for serious runners and joggers. A fixed wheel is also more practical when you encounter difficult terrain like sand or gravel, and they are always better if you plan on doing any running off-road, or running in general.A couple points to consider when selecting your wheel size:
- The bigger the wheels, the better control and shock absorption you will get when traversing off-road conditions.
- Strollers with smaller wheels are generally easier to maneuver, lighter to pick up and move, and they take up less space in your home or the trunk of your car.
- Anything with a 6 inch wheel is NOT intended for Jogging. No good. Do not try it.
- 12 inch wheels all around with a swivel could be used for light jogging or speed walking, provided the front wheel locks. They are certainly not ideal, however, as you will not get the performance you would from a fixed wheel stroller with 16 inch or 20 inch wheels.
- There are not many jogging strollers with 20 inch wheels, but if you are hard-core about your running routine, you may want to check them out. They will hold up after prolonged use, and perform like nothing else out there.
